From their nonstop smiles to their impeccable style, I adore everything about Joelle + Erick and I’m so grateful they’ve picked me to capture such an exciting time in their lives! We had a gorgeous summer evening in Rochester for their engagement session, and we kicked it off walking around downtown. I’ve definitely mentioned my love for the color red before, and I especially love how Joelle’s skirt adds a colorful pop to the urban setting! For our second location, we headed north to Ontario Beach Park for some photos on the water, and the light couldn’t have been more beautiful! With the boardwalk, pier, sand, and grassy area, this location definitely gives us lots of variety! Here are a handful of my favorites from their session – enjoy!
rochester engagement session
If you follow my work on social media, you might have noticed I’m not blogging most engagement sessions this year – I wish I could but there are just SO many things that I feel I should be spending my time on instead. However when a couple is THIS adorable, and the light is THIS incredible, (and I can find the time!) I can’t resist sharing some of my favorites!
Caitlin + Patrick drove to Rochester all the way from Scranton (3 hours + EACH way!) for their engagement session, so I definitely wanted to go the extra mile for them! I am so thankful that the weather turned out to be absolutely perfect. There’s nothing wrong with photos on a cloudy day, but when the sun is out and casting that magical golden evening light over everything, it adds another dimension to the images (and I completely geek out the entire session). LOVE + LIGHT, right?!
On top of the gorgeous weather, Caitlin + Patrick’s personalities made this shoot a dream. When Caitlin first wrote me she said that after seven+ years together they’re still in the honeymoon phase because they’re just as crazy about each other as when they met as teenagers (these two are high school sweethearts)!!! After photographing them, I could see that this is absolute truth. These two light each other up, and the non-stop genuine smiles and laughter made my job a breeze. I feel SO lucky that I get to capture loves like theirs, and I cannot wait to have these two in front of my camera again when their wedding rolls around next year!
2018 was another fantastic year at Katie Finnerty Photography! I had the privilege of photographing so many incredible couples for their engagement sessions, or just because! You really don’t need a special occasion to get photos taken with your significant other, because it’s ALWAYS a good idea to document moments and memories with the person you love! How many couples have been together for years and still have NO photos of themselves besides crappy quality cell phone shots that we eventually have to delete to clear space on our phones!?
I have so much fun at these sessions, hanging out with and getting to know my clients, and photographing them in some truly beautiful places. I photographed engagement sessions in all of the various climates Rochester, NY has to offer (and the weather is most definitely all over the place here!!), from heavy snowfall to hot & sunny summer nights! I kept it mostly local this year because there are so many gorgeous places in the Rochester area and nearby in the Finger Lakes and Buffalo, but I also got travel to Syracuse, Central Park and the Upper West Side in Manhattan, and Saratoga for some of these sessions!
So thankful for every single person in the photos below who gave me the incredible honor of photographing them this year, and I couldn’t be more excited for those who have weddings coming up this year!! Loved looking back and picking out some of my favorite images from 2018 to share with you here – enjoy!
P.S. Best of 2018 Weddings post is coming soon!!
Melissa & Oscar are SUCH a pleasure to be around, they’re so laid back and easy to chat with that photographing their engagement session felt like anything but work! They’ve known each other for over a decade, as they constantly ended up at the same parties and get-togethers since Oscar was good friends with Melissa’s sister and her husband. They typically ended up chatting and cracking each other up at these gatherings, and eventually realized that they never wanted to stop making each other laugh! I’m so glad that I got to photograph some of that joyful laughter during their engagement session last month, and I’m honored that they’ve chosen me to capture this exciting time in their lives! I could not be more excited for their wedding next summer!! Here are a handful of my favorite shots from their engagement session at Durand Eastman Park and Beach! Enjoy!
It feels like spring came and went in the blink of an eye this year, (I guess it’s not technically over but it’s 92 degrees out today so I’m calling it summer) so I’m really glad I was able to photograph some sessions while all the flowers were blooming in full force! It’s been such a busy month and I’m so excited to share images of all the sweet couples I got to photograph over the past few weeks!
Katie & Seth were in college at SUNY Geneseo when they met, and as Katie put it in her first email to me, “there hasn’t been a dull moment since!” I’m always so excited to receive inquiries from fellow Geneseo alumni because I know right off the bat that we have that season of our lives in common and it always ends up being a great fit, and I was especially excited to hear from these two because they’re close friends with a bunch of my friends and previous clients whom I absolutely adore! I loved photographing this session for them and can’t wait for their winter wedding next year!
They live in Washington DC so I was thrilled that we were able to fit their engagement session in while they were visiting Rochester, and I’m extra thankful that we ended up with such a gorgeous evening! We debated heading over to Highland Park because it is just insanely gorgeous in the springtime, but Lilac Festival was going on so we opted to avoid the traffic and crowds (which was very wise judging on how packed it was went I went later in the week – totally worth it for the tacos though YUM!). I think we ended up with an even more beautiful setting at the gardens of the George Eastman Museum. I seriously could never get enough of this location! Here are some of my favorite shots from the night!
We had to reschedule Katie & Jessie’s engagement session a few times due to bad weather, so I was thrilled when we finally ended up with a perfect fall day for them! This was a sunrise engagement session, which I don’t end up doing too many of but I am always so happy with the results when I do! We started off at the George Eastman Museum which is surrounded by gorgeous gardens and greenery, and it’s definitely one of my favorite locations to photograph at in Rochester! The light was absolutely perfect as the sun came up and Katie & Jessie were so much fun to photograph – I’m so excited for their wedding next year! We finished the session nearby at Rochester’s Highland Park, where we found a spot with some really colorful foliage (which was surprisingly hard to find this October around here!). Here are a handful of my favorite images from this shoot – enjoy!
Getting to know the couples that I work with makes me even better at photographing them, so right off the bat I ask them to share a little about themselves on my website’s inquiry form. I LOVE all the stories I get to hear! When Carrie wrote in hers that she and Jason met 1:50am during last call at a bar, I knew they were my type of people. That was proven true when we got together in person to chat about their photography, and it was as easy as talking with old friends. I have been so excited to photograph them ever since!
Carrie and Jason spend lots of date nights at the restaurant where they had their first date, the Winfield Grill in Rochester, so they figured that would be the perfect place to start off their engagement session. I wholeheartedly agreed as I love photographing couples in environments that are meaningful to them! I was loving life photographing them in the natural light from the Winfield’s floor-to-ceiling windows, and they seemed very content that their engagement session involved sipping on their favorite beverages!
Afterward we headed over to the area around Warner Castle at Highland Park for a change of scenery, and it was beautiful out! I don’t think any of us were expecting it to be 65 and sunny in mid-February here in Rochester, but I certainly couldn’t complain. I’m looking back on that day especially fondly now since we’re currently mid-blizzard here in Rochester and I’ve been snowed into my house for two days – cest la vie!
Needless to say, Carrie and Jason are an adorable and fun couple with excellent style (I want to steal Carries entire outfit) and I feel so lucky that I get to be their photographer! Cannot wait for their big day later this year!
Enjoy a few of my favorites from their session below!
The weather in Rochester this week has been all over the place! Two days ago we enjoyed a perfect 75 and sunny summer day in November, and today we woke up to snow falling outside! It’s really not surprising, there’s never a dull moment when it comes to Rochester weather, but the snow is making me feel like fall weather has come to an end. I’m so happy I got in a bunch of wonderful engagement sessions before the turn, and Emily & Tim’s was easily one of my favorites! It was a beautiful October afternoon and we started off their session at Mendon Ponds Park, and finished up in Rochester’s Park Ave area. These two are awesome and I had so much fun photographing them, and I cannot wait for their wedding next summer!
Here are a few of my favorites from their engagement session -- Enjoy!
Courtney and Eric's engagement session was on a beautiful summer night here in Rochester and the light was perfect! I love photographing couples in all different settings, but the field of tall grass and wildflowers where we started their shoot was definitely one of my favorites! I couldn't resist blogging some of my favorites from there! These two were such a pleasure to hang out with for a few hours and photograph, and I am SO looking forward to their wedding next May. Enjoy the photos!
I spent a beautiful, sunny evening in Rochester last week photographing Chris and Anna’s engagement session. These two were dressed to impress and I loved it! Classy and elegant outfits always look great!
I feel so lucky to live here in Rochester, NY and photograph all sorts of love stories around the city and it’s suburbs, but this particular engagement session was even closer to home than usual! We did it right in my neighborhood, which is a part of East Ave that I think is just gorgeous, especially with all the spring flowers in bloom. Whenever I drive to or from home I think “I should really photograph a session around here,” and now I’ve finally done it! At the end of the shoot we drove up to the reservoir at Cobbs’ Hill to catch the sunset, which was full of vibrant colors that night. This was such a fun session and I am so excited to photograph Chris & Anna’s winter wedding next year!
Enjoy the photos!
I love that engagement sessions give me a chance to get to know my clients, and allow them to get comfortable with me and being in front of the camera! Meghan and Brian were referred to me by friends, but their session was our first time meeting in person. I could tell almost instantly that they were going to be fantastic! They’re laid back and have great senses of humor AND they were extremely patient (and amused) with the fact that I kept calling Brian by the wrong name – Kevin. I’m usually pretty good with names and I don’t even any friends named Kevin so I really have no excuse, but I could. not. stop. It was weird. I’M SORRY BRIAN.
We chose to do the session on a fantastic stretch of the Genesee Riverway Trail where the path turns into a wooden bridge that extends over the river. It’s full of twists and turns over the water and it’s really a beautiful spot!
These two are adorable beyond words so I’ll just have to let the photos do most of the talking – enjoy!
What started as a friendship between Jessica and Nick turned into love, and eventually they made the decision to spend the rest of their lives together. I really like these two, and I’m so happy that I get to capture these special moments for them! We started off in Fairport where they live, and walked around the canal which is such a beautiful spot. Then it was time for a change of outfits and scenery, and we headed toward the city to Corn Hill Landing to capture some images of Jessica and Nick with the Rochester skyline. These two are wonderful and I know their wedding next summer will be spectacular – I can’t wait!
Brittany was a bridesmaid in a wedding I photographed last year, so this isn’t her first time on my blog, and it won’t be her last! Her and Scot are a great couple, and I’m so excited to be their wedding photographer!
We had to reschedule their engagement session a few times due to weather, so I was happy that when we were finally able to do it the weather was perfect! It was a beautiful October afternoon and the foliage in Highland Park was at its prime. We started the shoot off there, and then headed over to Corn Hill Landing for a change of scenery
Enjoy the photos!
Ashley and Andrew's engagement session last week was great! We started off at Highland Park and then headed over to the canal at Schoen Place. Ashley and Andrew love spending time at the canal, and it's actually where they got engaged! What better place to have their engagement photos done!? These two are fun, friendly, and easy-going - so great to work with! I cannot wait for their wedding next summer!
I love fall engagement sessions - the colors, the weather, the outfits, everything! For Sarah and Mike's shoot we started out at Corbett's Glen Nature Park which is a beautiful spot, and the trees there were just starting to show some color. Then we made our way over to Main St. in Fairport to take some pictures around the town and the canal. It was the perfect night for a shoot! Sarah & Mike are fantastic - I love their style, and they're a lot of fun to photograph! I'm so excited for their wedding!!
Alexa & Tim couldn’t have asked for a more perfect evening for their engagement session! We started off at their apartment so we could capture some photos of the two of them where Tim proposed to Alexa. Our next stop was the beach at Durand Eastman, a favorite spot for them to come with their beautiful yellow lab Lucky (who I had a soft spot for since she looks just like the yellow lab I had growing up, also named Lucky)! The clear blue skies turned into a beautiful sunset and it was a perfect night to be on the water.
The connection between these two is clear, and it makes my job easier when a couple has as much fun together as Alexa and Tim! They’re both great and I can’t wait for their wedding!
